Statue of Infant Jesus of Prague

One of the most vivid spiritual experiences I recall involved a statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague, which had been given to me by a friend. Upon opening the box, I discovered that the statue’s head had been broken. I carefully repaired it using glue and placed it on a shelf. A few days later, I picked up the statue to ensure the head was securely attached. At that moment, it spoke the words, “None of us are perfect,” and was surrounded by a radiant halo of light. The statue spoke on several occasions thereafter, and I had the sense that it may have been encouraging me to record the messages something I did not pursue at the time.

Pilgrimage to Medjugorje: A Personal Reflection

Medjugorje is a village nestled between the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina, predominantly inhabited by Croatian Catholics. It is most well-known as the site of reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary, which first occurred on the 24th of June, 1981, around six o’clock in the late afternoon. Since then, these apparitions have continued to be reported with remarkable frequency.

The initial vision was experienced by six young individuals: Ivanka Ivanković, Mirjana Dragićević, Vicka Ivanković, Ivan Dragićević, and Milka Pavlović. They described the Virgin Mary as a beautiful lady, holding a child in her arms. News of these events quickly spread, and Medjugorje has since become a significant pilgrimage destination, attracting millions of visitors over the years.

My own pilgrimage to Medjugorje took place during the summer. It was a deeply moving experience, during which I personally witnessed several apparitions. The first occurred while attending a talk by one of the visionaries. The event was held in a large hall filled with fellow pilgrims, where a prominent painting of the Virgin Mary adorned the wall. As I listened and gazed at the image, I distinctly saw it move. I quietly mentioned this to Margaret, who was seated next to me, but she dismissed my observation and asked me to remain silent.

After the talk, we took photographs near the painting. While Margaret was taking a photo of me standing beside it, she suddenly exclaimed that the Virgin appeared to move and point toward me. She later experienced the same phenomenon while posing for a photograph herself. Upon returning to England, I had the film developed, and the difference between the original painting and the image captured in the photograph taken of me in Medjugorje was clearly visible.

A second, equally profound experience occurred as we queued with other pilgrims for a taxi to attend another talk on apparitions, this time in the mountains. I was feeling unwell and had intended to return to the hotel, which was quite a walk away in the growing darkness. At that moment, I saw a vision of Christ standing at the corner of the road near us. Just then, despite the long line ahead of us, a taxi unexpectedly appeared and stopped directly in front of us. Margaret, sensing the urgency, pushed me inside saying, “Get in, for God’s sake,” and we set off toward the mountain.

Upon arrival, I was handed a blanket by a fellow pilgrim to sit on the rocky terrain. That evening turned into a truly unforgettable moment—sitting under the starlit sky, surrounded by others in quiet reverence, listening to a talk that deeply resonated with the spirit of the place.

Lourdes

During my pilgrimage to Lourdes, I encountered several powerful and, what I believe to be, supernatural experiences in the sacred places we visited. One of the most striking moments occurred at the site of the original apparition a peaceful alcove nestled in a rocky cave, surrounded by greenery. A large statue of the Virgin Mary stands there, above a candle stand where pilgrims gather to pray, light candles, and take photographs.

On the day we visited the shrine, it began to rain just as we arrived. As the rain intensified, pilgrims remained in silent prayer, many hoping for healing or comfort. I stood in front of the statue, half amused by the timing of the weather and quietly thinking, we must’ve chosen the wrong day to visit. But then something extraordinary happened a golden light appeared around the head and shoulders of the Virgin’s statue, illuminating it even as the rain poured down. The light didn’t resemble artificial lighting, and it clearly startled and moved several people nearby who witnessed it. Others, deep in prayer with their heads bowed, may not have noticed it at all. The light remained long enough for me to take a few photographs a moment I will never forget.

Later in the pilgrimage, while visiting another church with a statue of John the Baptist, I experienced another mysterious event. As we were leaving, I heard a man’s voice, though no one was immediately visible. Once outside, I felt something in my hand a small silver coloured medal of a saint. I showed it to a priest, who suggested I might have bought it and simply forgotten. But I hadn’t. I didn’t even recognise the saint depicted.

Throughout my journey, I’ve had both uplifting and unsettling encounters much like we all do with the people we meet in everyday life. From sacred places in England to shrines across Europe, including Walsingham, Faversham, Aylesford, and many others. I’ve come to appreciate the mystery and caution that accompany such experiences.

If there’s one message I’ve taken from this path, it’s this: be discerning in the spiritual doors you open and the people you trust. Not every presence or encounter is what it seems even the devil was once an angel.
